We all know Reddit is a source of pretty strange stuff. This one we came across isn't exactly strange, but it's a rare one indeed. A customer walked into Best Buy with the intention of buying a second-gen Chromecast but walked out with a still unreleased third generation.

The OP (original poster) as redditors like to call it, clarifies that Best Buy must have put out the new device by mistake. When the cashier tried to scan the item, the Chromecast didn't appear in the database, but since the customer already had it in his hand and the price was identical to the second generation Chromecast, the guys over at Best Buy let him have it under the old SKU.

When the OP got home and tried to install it, he noticed there's something fundamentally different compared to the second generation. He then goes into detail about the design - the new Chromecast comes in a thicker shell, the top is no longer glossy and the Chrome logo is replaced by the Google one. Power is still delivered over microUSB (no USB-C), but the HDMI connector no longer magnetically attaches to the device.

The third-generation Chromecast retained all of the same features of the first two generations, but was designed to be faster and provide a higher frame rate of 1080p.

It is currently the only model out of the three generations listed on the Google Store alongside the latest model. If you want to buy a 1st or 2nd generation Chromecast, your only option is to buy one secondhand, though for the cost, you might as well go for the 3rd generation.

If you're not sold on the Chromecast with Google TV but still want something that works as a Chromecast and has a remote and on-device apps for easier browsing, consider the runner up in best Android TV boxes and my all-time favorite streaming series, the NVIDIA Shield TV. This lightsaber hilt of a streaming tube features the same amount of storage as the Google TV. Still, it has a much more powerful processor and NVIDIA's dedication to the best streaming experience.

If you want to buy a Chromecast in 2021, the clear winner is the Chromecast with Google TV. For $50, you get a 4K-capable streaming stick with a great interface, one of the best remotes on the market, and the best Google Assistant experience on a streaming box to date. While it's still working out a few minor bugs, Google's making a great effort here. I'm expecting the Chromecast with Google TV to be an even greater streamer by next Christmas than last winter when I bought two of them as gifts for family members because they were just so much better than their sad old TV apps.

The top-spec Nest Home Max from Google has a 10-inch HD display, brilliant speakers for listening to the radio or podcasts, and all the best smart features from the devices above, though it is the most expensive model. The display will adjust based on how light the room is to give you the clearest picture, and the built-in camera doubles up as an indoor security camera when not being used for video calling.

On a more subjective level, we considered how each speaker could fit into a home and where it performed best based on its size, sound quality, and special abilities, such as whether it had a screen, recipe content, sleep tracking, and the ability to be a security camera.
